Zircon - a key mineral for dating and tracking geological processes

September 8 - 13, 2013, Pavia, Italy

Goals

The international school is hosted by University of Pavia and devoted to PhD students, post-docs and young researchers. The school will explore new frontiers of zircon geochronology, petrology and thermochronology. Case studies on the usefulness of zircon studies in tracking magmatic, sedimentary and metamorphic processes will be presented by several lecturers, including F. Corfu (University of Oslo, Norway), M. Horstwood (British Geological Survey, UK), J. Kosler (University of Bergen, Norway), M. Malusà (Università Milano Bicocca, Italy), J-L. Paquette (CNRS & Université B. Pascal, France), D. Rubatto (ANU, Australia), F. Wu (Chinese Academy of Science, China) and M. Zattin (University of Padova, Italy). The school will end with a one-day excursion (led by S. Sinigoi, Università di Trieste, Italy) to the Sesia magmatic system (Ivrea-Verbano Zone, southern Alps).

Laser ablation ICP-MS workshop in Charleston, South Carolina

March 6 - 8, 2013

Workshop goals

  • Identifying and propagating the limiting uncertainties in LA U-Th-Pb dating
  • Reassessing the use of population statistics and the appropriate use of linear regressions and weighted means
  • Identifying software processing contributions to improving the 2% (2s) ILC uncertainty limit
  • Understanding interpretation limits in assessing ages and uncertainties of complex datasets – the role of geological phenomena
  • Isoplot-type functionality for the future
